If you are like my mother you enjoy buying things because you like them and do not care if they work with your decor, desired look or taste. If you are also like my mother you will then moan about how nothing in your home goes together and how awful it looks. Quite right, it is all well and good decorating your home with things you like, you should, it is after all your home. However you still have to try continuity in theme, design and general aesthetic. What I suggest is to create a scrap-book of your favourite interiors and from this, over time you will see a pattern emerging. This will be your favoured design, so run with it.

People go wrong with interior design for two main reasons (in my opinion). Continue reading »

GRAFFITI, ART NOUVEAU AND A LITTLE BIT OF SOUL

The Hotel Wiesler is the new epitome of contemporary luxury. Clean spaces with retro furniture achieving simplicity and warmth to this rather special Austrian hotel. As a city center hotel, the Wiesler has a romantic ‘come hither’ appeal, despite its strong business use. Trendy business travellers will be in their element surrounded by idiosyncratic design. Whilst those on a city break can feel culturally included even when sitting for dinner in the street art inspired “Speisesaal” with painting by Josef Wurm.

Going one step further to new indulgence and hospitality, the once five star Grand Wiesler has freed itself from ratings and restrictions, points and regulations. Instead it aims to set “new standards as far as additional service is concerned”, very trendy, neccassary and modern of them.

The press shots below show the Wiesler in all its glory with branding by Moodley. Continue reading »

The Apartment creative agency created this NYC apartment , a combination of contemporary design trends (in space, key furniture and light) with 80′s influence. The project combined three smaller apartments to create this spacious uptown residence. Placed on the 61st floor the apartment has stunning views over central park which the design team made the focus of each room. Bleached pine floors add texture but a simple canvas for the dark woods of shelving and units; as well as bursts of colour that appear around the rooms. Continue reading »

Inspired by the Finnish Moomin books by Tove Jansson, this is an exciting interior design project for a family entertainment center. The epic indulgence in colour and three dimensional design adds the surrealism and fantasy that is sought. You may not want this in your home, but it’s surely an inspiration for breaking out of the box of interior design. Continue reading »

Amirkhan Abdurakhmanov is an interior/ spatial designer and has come up with a concept for a wall that changes colour and pattern for the ultimate design mobility. Formulated by an array of prisms that can then produce any colour in a variety of patterns, one can change their interior space continuously. I for one love the idea of being able to alter a wall colour as and when my mood/ and taste shift. However we try though, the only way is through light, I use Phillips Living Colour which works well enough at night for ambience, but doesn’t alter the decor or feel of the interior all too much. ‘Change It’ could be a good start to making light work for us in a whole new, interior design orientated way. Being the impatient so-and-so I am, I will continue seek other ways of quickly and dramatically altering an interior space, as and when the mood strikes. Continue reading »

An amazing open plan Amsterdam, canal side loft interior by UXUS. Successfully, in my opinion, creating a warm environment through curtain walls and natural furniture. Yet making a statement of eclectic taste as a reflection of their client. This kind of design I’ve seen usually reserved for retail spaces, however with some homely touches it can be most pleasant for both the minimalist and traditionalist. Here are some more photos so you can make up your own mind. Continue reading »

There is a general rule in design when it comes to colour, stick to nature and you can’t go wrong. Wonderful I think as there is every colour in nature, even my favoured über bright orange. This is not however what they mean. For colours to work in interiors, as in fashion, they must be harmonious as they are in nature. You do not step out of your door see the multitude of greens in the grass and trees on a backdrop of hazy blues and think, ghastly as the orange sunrise mashes itself into the picture. Of course you don’t, you gaze in awe and the misery of having to leave such a sight and go to work to your gray cubicle, white retail space or other drab interior. Unless you are lucky and work in a beautiful place. I’m yet to have such a pleasure. I digress. The Autumnal palette is a favourite for interior design success (providing you like these colours). The natural fading of the leaves gives a range of colour that is prominent in good wood furniture, light and sleek with attention in all the right details like edging. Green cushions and hued blue walls can add subservient attraction to statement furniture pieces. All the while the natural flow from outdoors to in will add comfort to your surroundings, avoiding garish and otherwise ‘unnatural’ colour. Continue reading »
